The Mission: Precision Over Guesswork
Most Zakat calculators on the web today are built for speed, not depth. They are often “black boxes” - you plug in your numbers, and a total pops out without any context or explanation. While these are useful for quick estimates, they often fail to account for the complexity of modern financial lives.
The Challenge of Modern Zakat
For many of us, applying 2.5% isn’t the hard part. It’s understanding the “why” behind the numbers, whether the position is conservative or lenient, and whether there’s strong consensus or disagreement. Depending on your personal situation or convictions, you may decide to go more conservative, or, as Allah knows best, you may need to go more lenient. While we are unable to know with 100% certainty whether one method is better than the other for certain asset classes, we do know with 100% certainty that Allah knows what is in your heart and intent.
Our Approach: The Researcher’s Utility
We are not scholars. We are researchers and developers who realized that the “nuance” was missing from the digital world. We spent many hours digging through fatwas, classical texts, and contemporary scholarly papers from major schools of thought and global Zakat councils.
Instead of picking one “correct” opinion and forcing you to follow it, we built this calculator to reflect the diversity of scholarship.
Transparency at Every Step
We don’t hide the math. Every module includes scholarly notes that expand on the different schools of thought.
Toggle Your View
If there is a valid disagreement - for example, on how to treat a 401(k) or a Roth IRA - we give you the option to choose the view you follow.
Total Independence
Zakatable.com is not a charity. We don’t collect funds. This is a pure utility designed to give you a precise, defensible number so you can fulfill your obligation with total confidence.
Beyond the “Final Number”
We believe you shouldn’t have to wonder how the calculator reached its conclusion. Once you finish your calculation, we provide a full Itemized Breakdown.
This isn’t just a total; it’s a clear view of:
Entered
The raw value of your assets.
Adjusted
Exactly how much was deducted as non-zakatable (like the tax portion of a retirement account) based on the scholarly position you selected.
Zakatable
The final amount subject to the pillar.
A Living Project
We acknowledge the weight of this responsibility. If you find any disagreements with our methodology, have feedback on the user experience, or have access to better scholarly sources that we should account for, we are more than open to hearing them. This project is a continuous effort toward accuracy and clarity.
